At least ONE thing works in my favour [20 Aug 2007|02:05pm]
[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<a [...] <http://www.homebake.com.au/>') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

I have <a href=http://www.homebake.com.au <http://www.homebake.com.au/>
>Homebake</a> tickets!!!

(even though they are not physically obtainable until November - not a
bad anti-scalping move) - <i>[makes sure that Homebake is on Events List
and on Facebook]</i>

I do think that the better idea would be to have a certain amount on
sale and then stagger the releases in tiers. That way, more genuine
attendees have a chance to get them - perhaps also reducing the number
of tickets that one can buy to 4 (at the most) would be a smart move -
although I think this is now the standard. Haven't seen Chrissie
Amphlett perform since she did a Mardi Gras a few years ago and I was
working security there :-) If memory serves, she performed 'Pleasure &
Pain' there. So it will be a buzz seeing her headline the Festival
(first time a female-fronted band has even done so actually ;))

Hellfire was packed on Friday night - it was quite a worthwhile night -
especially with the 2 new players from LA making a return visit. It's a
pleasure to do Security for people who can rivet the audiences attention
- even if their scene takes about 30 mins... very worthwhile indeed -
just like the old days with Snikki / Angee and I. Certain people were
supposed to come along to HF, but didn't and once again some of the
people there, bailed for Arq. Saturday was a day of AFI voting
screenings (which was broken up into a morning session and an evening
session - the evening one I didn't get to as I was having Michelle over
- and going to head out to The Gaelic Club). Of course having Hellfire
the night before meant that in the end, we didn't head out to The
Gaelic, as after watching <a
href=http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367027/>Shortbus</a> and <a
href=http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165832/>Interstate 60</a>, we just
didn't go. So it was kind of a trashy yet quiet night in. Sunday
afternoon was another AFI Voting Session (which I couldn't get anyone
else into unless they are AFI members) and then home for sleep.

I realise I haven't noted the IBM/Lenovo saga yet... well, 2 weeks ago
my laptop decided to NOT to recognise the Ethernet port so I could only
connect to my ISP through wireless... this is not too bad - as I have a
wireless router as well. However, it got worse and worse and so I
reported it to IBM to get fixed. This meant that they reported it to
Lenovo (as they are now... er... 'separate companies'). OK. So, I
upgraded the warranty so that I would be getting next-day on-site
service for 3 years. This is ALSO a good thing - especially when a
motherboard can cost upward of $600+ and service can cost $180/hour. So,
then the saga started with my warranty being miskeyed into the Lenovo
system in KL, yes Lenovo's Asia-pacific HQ is Malaysia. There is no
Australian HQ. So - fast-forward a week and a half when (after many
complaints and following up from both myself and the original people who
sold me the laptop, they fix the problem and IBM (who are Lenovo's
agents in Australia) despatch a technician, from an outsourced company
(not even IBM themselves). He takes 2 hours to remove the motherboard,
replace it and then snap one of the spacing plates so that the On/Off
button doesn't work properly. Now, that being said, there is also no
sound as I believe he didn't reconnect the sound connection (no I am
positive it is not software related). So, after even more complaints to
the IBM complaint-line - and a letter cc'd to ACA and IBM C-SAT - they
have decided to list the laptop as DOA, and replace it with a newer
model. No cost to me - except the pain-in-the-backside of having to
backup all my files and then reinstall them and the programs and so
forth - AND they seem to want to supply me with Vista Home (or Business)
which means I can't load Doom or SimCity or Civilisation IV onto it
(because they aren't Vista-compatible - although I guess there are
patches available). Anyway, they now state that to replace the machine
will take 4 weeks - because new models aren't available in this country
- so I have given them a further serve (next business-day
repair/replace, my ass) and they are supposed to be getting back to me
today with either a revised date (with a week, thank you) or another
option to be completed by the end of the week.

Supposedly bumping in today - but, well, the power went out on the
building we were bumping in to - and apparently it's an underground line
which they have to trace. So, there'll be no bumping in for us as yet.
However, work is VERY busy right now (yes I understand the irony of
posting from work that work is busy so I can't post) - so I am not sure
how much time I will have to update <a
href=http://eventsinsydney.livejournal.com
<http://eventsinsydney.livejournal.com/> >eventsinsydney</a> today -
perhaps this evening, definitely by tomorrow.

It's that time of year... [14 Aug 2007|12:15pm]
So, working crazily on August 6th and missing the initial release of
Linkin Park tickets was a pain-in-the-butt. True. [shrugs] What
can you do? Be peeved and just leave it. Though, vena_trix did say that there
might be another show released. So there was. (I think)
yesterday. Of course I checked this morning because this is the first
chance I had to remind myself... and... yes you guessed it - the second
show is sold out.

In a word...

Bugger.

And so the week begins... [13 Aug 2007|12:08pm]
I really have to think up more interesting subject lines (said in a Ron
Wesley-ish voice)

So, it's Monday morning. The weekend seems to have flown somewhat, which
is a nice thuing in a way, but also a crazy thing - as it just means
that I want there to be more of a weekend. Not to mention that things
are gearing up for the movements we're doing at work. I think (at the
moment) we'll all be quitting the Wynyard premises in the next 10 days
or so, and moving to our new digs (which is kinda funny, because the
'new' digs will only last about a month. Then, it's all over red rover).

Weekend was good though.

Thursday was The Cure, but you've heard enough from me about them and
how great the show was. If not, go and re-read ;) Or go and have a read
of all the people on Facebook/MySpace/Vox, etc... Suffice to say that it
was stunning and I hope they come back again (and that we don't have to
wait another 7 years - yes, Kym, it was 7 years ago when we went to
their last show).

Friday was nothing much, apart from work, though other friends of mine
went to The Cure's Friday show, and then again there was Fascination
Street (run by Ash) as the official Cure after-party (sorry I didn't get
to spend too much time there, I was more than tired).

Saturday was a nice fairly quiet day, followed by medicinalminx coming
over with clubbing clothes, followed by a frantic getting ready for the
early-starting Die Maschine with a live gig by Psyche. So, with medicinalminx and piratenoir in tow, we
dashed into town, and was more than happy to see Imogene there as well,
though not as tall as she was last weekend at Ascension (those boots
were HUGE) :) Gig started a little late, but I was more than pleasantly
surprised by the support acts. I had not heard/seen Neuropa before, and I must
admit I very much liked what I heard. I'll be looking into their last 5
CDs, methinks. Somehow, I managed to entirely miss The Inflatable Voodoo Dolls (which
really puzzled me because I was there sitting in the club) unfortunate
because I was looking forward to hearing them [finally]. Still, I must
have been engrossed in chatting to im at the time. Next time Gadget.
Psyche came on also very 80's inspired and (as Im was saying) very Tubeway Army, and
whilst they were good, I think Neuropa were better (perhaps on the
night). I'll have to compare - but I'll be looking out for Neuropa's
gigs now. The rest of the club passed in a rush and then it was back to
The Fortress for geeking and Cable.

Sunday was a small mix-up on dates and times, which was resolved - but a
little weirdly. Cancelled people coming over (but apparently that wasn't
needed - I know cryptic, but still). Long chats with medicinalminx, and then
collapsing (read: sleeping) in the middle of pizza. Tiredness and sleep
(which was slow in coming) coupled with an early wake-up this morning
because of an attack of work.

Nominations for this months barbarianplates are closed
and the voting is open. Members, have a look and have a vote and then
have a feast. Dinner is the last Friday of this month.

Oh yes - I also have Xanga. Kill me now (at least you can post to it via
email).

I must say that 600 thread-count Egyptian sheets, rock my sleep-world,
and all I need are 2 matching Queen-sized black doona-covers (of the
same thread-count ;))

Interesting final paragraph [10 Aug 2007|04:44pm]
From SMH Online (emphasis is
mine):

"The Web 2.0 phenomenon which includes sites like MySpace, Facebook
and YouTube has come under increasing fire from government and industry
due to its largely user authored content which is notoriously
difficult to regulate.
"

Read: '...notoriously difficult for The Government and Industry to
control.'

Today... is Friday [10 Aug 2007|01:57pm]
Well this morning (after having a really nice buzz last night due to a
3-and-a-half-hour stint with Robert Smith and friends at The Cure
concert), things are kinda OK.

I mean sure, the rent MIGHT go up, and sure I have to put in my Tax by
October 31, and sure I am going to The Cure after-party (the official one at Phoenix Bar), and sure I am
seeing Psyche tomorrow at
Die Maschine (with a close friend)...

However, there was something that fell by the wayside, which looks like
it might be getting a new lease on (albeit a short) life - Thanks,
Joss

I'm not sure why this excites me.... [09 Aug 2007|10:54am]
...and I think it raises some tricky questions regarding copyright/use
of copyrighted characters and ideas, but it still excites me...

Createspace is the new
name of Amazon's on-demand self-publishing service for the super long
tail of books, audio CD's and film DVD/Blue-ray. Products automatically
get an ISBN number and are listed on Amazon.com, including "Search
Inside" for books. (Lifted from Metafilter)

I can see how it will be GREAT for self-publishing... but what happens
when someone publishes fanfic or slashfic? Are there checks and balances
in place?

Regardless... (until they work that out) I can finally get my Harry
Potter meets Star Trek novel published....

(no no I am NOT serious)

Well, it's been a week or so... [08 Aug 2007|05:57pm]
Been away, been back, been all over the place. However, it's nice to be
home (for the foreseeable future). The past week has been full of
catch-ups and some getting out to see people - some whom I have sadly
been neglecting for too long and am really looking forward to seeing
much more of.

On the good news front (apart from me being back - well the cats are
happy anyway), I have been given September 1 & 2 off work (yes I KNOW
it's a weekend, and I KNOW what weekend it is) because I got in first.
It was more than possible that I might NOT have that time off as we are
on 24/7 call from August 20 onwards. So, the upshot of this being that I
can get to Under The
Blue Moon
</b> and have the next day off. This is a VERY good thing
in my book.

I have a lot of things happening in the upcoming couple of months, so I
know I will be more than busy - not to mention that from mid-August
through to mid-September I will be sporadically incommunicado. That's
just the way it has to be until then - work-stuff. Sorry for any
last-minute cancellations (in advance).

Let's see, News?

Hmmm Rent's going up at The Fortress in 60
days - and I'm challenging the amount of the rise (over 10% is a little
steep when little work has been done on the place, and there are issues
which need to be addressed).

Amusingly, 60 days is when this contract of mine is out (end of
September) , so I'm technically on the market now (although not
available until end September). So... if anyone knows of anything which
is going (no, I'm not a programmer ;)) at or around September 20-ish,
then let me know :) - I mean I will be looking as well, but as you know
- most agencies say "Call us 4 weeks out and we can start
looking then."

Barbarians At The
Plates
nominations are closing tonight (for this month) and we have
3 nominations in so far. Get them in whilst you can. Next month
(September) is our second degustation, which will be taken from
nominations by the most excellent Jackie McMillan (from City Hub News).

OK - for the moment, I think that's it. I have dinner happening tonight
(maybe a call into a pub afterwards) and The Cure tomorrow night... who else is
hitting the Thursday night show? Saturday will be Die Maschine... yes I
think I shall need foos and sleep soon...

Holy Snapping... WTF?!?!?!?! [01 Aug 2007|12:08pm]
"POLICE and security agencies will be given unprecedented "sneak and
peek" powers to search the homes and computers of suspects without their
knowledge under legislation to go before Federal Parliament next week.

The extensive powers - which also give federal police the right to
monitor communications equipment without an interceptions warrant - come
amid growing public disquiet about counter-terrorism powers following
the bungled handling of the Mohamed Haneef case.

Under the laws, officers from the federal police and other agencies
would be able to execute "delayed notification warrants", allowing them
to undertake searches, seize equipment and plant listening devices in
businesses and homes.

Police and security officers will be able to assume false identities to
gain entry and conduct the surreptitious searches.

But the person affected by the raid does not have to be informed for at
least six months, and can remain in the dark for 18 months if the
warrant is rolled over."

So.... who wants to join me and go and see 'Pricilla: Queen of the
Desert - The Musical' at The Lyric Theatre, Star City, before it closes?
(Season closes September 2nd). Perhaps mix this up with dinner? A
possible barbarianplates outing
for this month - to make it a little different, and getting ready for
our next degustation in September ;)

(I'm not sure what date I will want to see it but [obviously] in the
next 4 weeks would be a plus).

If there's enough interest we'll make a night of it - if not, then I'll
just head on over there on a night of my own choosing.

Will he tell us or not?..... NOT! [31 Jul 2007|11:50am]
"Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews says he
has been advised that releasing secret information which he says
convinced him to cancel Mohamed Haneef's visa could jeopardise an
ongoing investigation."

It was asked: "Who do these people think they are to ask for such
information to be released?". Let me tell you who they are. They are the
people whose rights and liberties you are trying to erode, they are the
people whose lives you have put in danger by putting us into a war of
attrition which they did not want to be a part of, they are the people
who pay your wage and who look to your Parliament to make well-informed
decisions based on fact (not political hysteria), they are the people
who your Parliament lied to about Tampa for desperate political gain,
they are the Australian people and by the Gods they deserve better than
your stupidity.

Where is Jimmy Stewart when we need him? We need his philibuster scene
from 'Mr Deeds Goes to Washington', we need Michael Douglas from 'The
American President' (on behalf of the Australian people), we need Edward
Woodward from 'Breaker Morant' to apply Rule 3-0-3 to this situation. If
this entire issue wasn't so damned dangerous in setting precedent, it
would be a Three Stooges comedy.

Dear Minister Andrews... [30 Jul 2007|10:51am]
You can duck and weave and obfuscate all you like. Please continue to do
so as your 'twisting in the wind' is becoming amusing to the bulk of the
populace, though perhaps a little tiresome by now. However, you will
answer for your stupidity. Your so-called defending your actions
"...with one arm tied behind my back because of protected
information"
is now laughable, as all the so-called evidence has
been revealed to be erroneous or false. Therefore, why would you
continue to have Dr Haneef's working visa revoked? Is this a desperate
face-saving exercise? Or sheer bloody-mindedness? Is this a case of 'the
Government must be seen to have done the right thing regardless of the
outcome of the investigation'? Isn't it more logical to say 'We got it
wrong and we are sorry' and restore his Visa with all humility?

Hmmmm... that would be admitting that this entire thing has been a
Government-supported fiasco. I wonder if you (as one of our duly-elected
representatives - assigned to the Immigration portfolio) will give us a
straight/comprehensive answer. After all, you were elected by your
constituency, and the Australian public is (in effect) your boss, and
Minister Andrews, your boss wants some answers pretty damned fast!

Continuing your current stance is a stupid act. One which will aid in
costing you the election.

The ongoing LJ / VOX outage saga... [25 Jul 2007|03:34pm]
A quote from Six-Apart (LJ and Vox's parent company):
"Six Apart services are suffering from downtime due to the power
outage in San Francisco and the impact it had on our co-location
facility."

This applies to all LiveJournal and Vox Services.

The outage has been ascribed to a power equipment failure on Tuesday
(San Francisco time) afternoon, which "knocked out electricity to
tens of thousands of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. customers on the
Peninsula and in San Francisco - including PG&E's own office and the
Financial District."

Further (from SFGate.Com): "The outages began around 2 p.m. and
struck a wide swath of downtown and southeastern San Francisco as well
as an unspecified area of the northern Peninsula, said PG&E spokeswoman
Darlene Chiu. All customers were back online by 4 p.m. [local time], she
said. PG&E estimated that 30,000 to 50,000 customers were affected,
among them buildings housing scores of employees. The problem began when
breakers in the utility's transmission service opened for an unknown
reason, Chiu said. Every time workers attempted to close those breakers
to restore service, it caused voltage fluctuations -- high and low flows
of electricity through the system -- that impacted PG&E's Martin
Substation in Daly City, she said. That, in turn, caused a transformer
to fail in a manhole under 560 Mission St. Witnesses reported hearing a
blast shortly before 2 p.m. and then seeing flames licking up through
the manhole grate. Chiu said PG&E could not confirm that an explosion
had occurred. No one was injured."

In regards to Data Centre outages in the Bay Area: "The data center
365 Main -- which hosts a number of Internet sites, including
Craigslist, Yelp and RedEnvelope -- also lost power, causing frustration
among many Web surfers. Several of the sites posted messages to explain
to their users that they were having difficulties, while others said
they were undergoing scheduled maintenance or upgrades. ... Some of the
sites, including Craigslist, remained down even after power was
restored, as administrators ensured that data in the server hadn't been
damaged, among other checks."
